You can check a non-profit's tax exempt number to verify that the organization is legitimate. Gather information on the organization, including the name, address and city, state and zip code. Go online to the Internal Revenue Service website and go to the Charities and Non-Profits page.
Steps Check to make sure that the organization you are considering is a good one. Check how they spend their money. Look for concrete results. Find out what their assets are. Check into their capital reserves. Look for an auditor's commentary. See who is getting paid how much. See if there are any complaints. Look for criticisms of the charity.
